Social
Studies
Social studies instruction in the classroom should include an integration
of content areas that are applied through various theories. I believe social
studies curriculum should be intertwined seamlessly with other content
areas like mathematics, reading, science, and etc. providing students,
through the inclusion of different theories, with real life experiences.
Bruner’s idea that students should be encouraged to discover facts for
themselves can help students learn to research inside and outside the classroom.
John Dewey’s belief in inquiry learning, i.e. steps to a problem, questions,
etc., for the student should also be included to strengthen problem-solving
skills. Social studies instruction in the classroom must be taught using
various theories with integrated curriculum for real world success. .
The social studies curriculum in the elementary grades is an important
part of the future role that each student will take on as an adult. As
a teacher it is my responsibility to introduce the curriculum study
of: culture, change over time, people and their environment, individual
development, groups and institutions, government, production, distribution
and consumption, science and technology, global connections, and civic
ideals and practices.
Since social studies is an unique subject and we’re always surrounded by
a piece of history, every child has the opportunity of learning social
studies; every child has the capability of learning as long as they are
given the opportunity to learn.
I believe that “real world” content should be incorporated into teaching
social studies. Asking students to solve real life problems will promote
higher level thinking and could possibly prepare them for the real world
they will face in the future. Students will continue learning about the
world and the people in it for the rest of the their lives, that is why
I think students should be exposed to the different cultures and traditions
of many different people. Students need to be aware of the problems in
our community, state and nation and it is our responsibility as teachers
to prepare students for the real world.
